FAQ

These are general hair FAQ. Please be sure to read our salon Policies too!

Q: How long will my appointment take?

A: A haircut & shampoo will take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. Blowouts are 30 minutes minimum, and up to 90 minutes for long and/or thick hair. Touch-up color can be as quick as 15 minutes, whereas partial highlights covering the same basic area take up to 45 minutes. Full highlights or balayage require up to 75-120 minutes.

Don’t forget processing time for any color will be another 30-60 minutes! So, for example, if you’re getting your grays covered along with a trim & blowout, figure an average of 40 minutes x 3 (color-process-cut/dry), or about 2 hours.

Oh, going from brunette to platinum? Plan on about 6 hours. (And that’s only if you’ve had a consultation first.)

Please note these are approximate guidelines. There are many variables!

Q: How much do I tip?

A: Of course, tipping is at your discretion, but the industry standard is similar to that of restaurants: 20% of service total. If you’ve been shampooed — and especially if you enjoyed the complimentary scalp massage — it’s nice to tip the assistant $2-5 as well. Tips in cash are always appreciated, but credit card tipping is welcome too.

Q: Who referred you?

A: Be sure to ask your stylist to fill out a referral card for you! Give it to a friend for their first Hair Love visit and you’ll BOTH get a $10 credit! We rely on word of mouth to build our business.

Q: And by color you mean…

A: Highlights? This means either foils or hand-painted (balayage). Partial means crown of head or face-framing; full means the whole head.

A touch-up? This refers to the reapplication of a single process color, usually at the roots and/or to cover grays.

Glaze, gloss and toner are basically the same thing. “Toner” is an older term for a process that counter-acts unwanted hues (i.e., purple rinse for grey hair, blue rinse for brassy hues). Today, we say “glaze” or “gloss” for a similar process that is used more often as an enhancement or color or smoothing treatment on its own.

Transformation hair means a big change. Going blonde? Anything is possible but if you have brown or black or box-dyed hair, it will be a series of processes which will require time, patience, and the prowess of our master colorists. We need to discuss your vision. If you’re a new client, you’ll need to come in for a consultation.

Q: Why a consultation?

A: New & Consultation clients, especially for color; we require a brief meeting before we book your appointment to learn more about you & your hair goals! A 15-minute consultation will create a bond and set you & your stylist at ease to begin your transformation! Book a consultation for $50, which will be credited toward your total service bill.
